| Excel chart link nixes need for manual updates |

Office 2002 offers a number of ways to use Excel and Outlook together to communicate information. Of course, you can send a spreadsheet by using File | Send To Mail Recipient from within Excel, but there might be times that you want to send a single chart without all of the hubbub of sending an entire workbook.
If you want to mail a single chart, first things first: Create a chart in Excel from your workbook data. When that's done, copy the chart to the clipboard by selecting it and clicking Edit | Copy (or pressing [Ctrl]C).
Next, go to Outlook and start a new e-mail message. With your message open, click anywhere in the body of the message and then click Edit | Paste Special. From the Paste Special menu, choose Paste Link to insert the chart as a link.

If a chart is inserted as a link, this means that any changes made to the linked file will be reflected in the chart link, as long as the Excel file that the chart comes from remains available (i.e., on a network drive that both you and your recipient can access). For example, are you sending your boss the sales figures for the quarter? Link the chart, and if there's a correction to the figures, you can just update the Excel file, and the chart will update automatically. |
