| Messages mysteriously stop arriving in your PST |
| |
If you use Outlook 2002 with a personal folder (PST) file that contains a lot of messages and other items, you might be able to send messages but not receive any new messages in your Inbox. This happens because Outlook 2002 limits the size of a PST file to less than 2 GB to prevent corruption of the file. You also might have a similar problem attempting to synchronize from an Exchange Server because Outlook uses the same 2-GB limit for offline folder (OST) files.
With the initial release of Outlook 2002, there is no indication that the file is full. If you install the Office XP Service Pack 1, however, Outlook will generate an error when it attempts to deliver to a full file. The error message for a PST file specifies that the file has reached its maximum size. The error message for an OST file indicates a synchronization error. These errors can give you a hint as to the source of the problem.
If you're working with an OST file and can't synchronize the OST with the Exchange Server, start Outlook in offline mode--which causes it to work from the OST--and delete/archive items as needed to reduce the size of the OST file.
After cleaning out items, you should also compact the file. Choose Tools | E-Mail Accounts and select the account and then click Change. Click More Settings and click the Advanced tab. Click Offline Folder File Settings and click Compact Now.
Note: Microsoft is reportedly going to set the file size limit in the next version of Outlook to 33 TB (yes, that's terabytes). This will resolve the full file problem but will undoubtedly drive administrators nuts trying to handle such large user profiles. |
