| Improve security and usability with Office XP SP 2 |
| |
Microsoft has introduced Service Pack 2 for Office XP, and the service pack includes some fixes for Outlook that make it worth considering deploying SP2.
Unlike many other Microsoft service packs, however, Office XP SP2 requires that you first install SP1. Before deploying SP2, you'll need to first deploy SP1 if you haven't already done so.
SP2 fixes the problem with POP3 accounts not firing rules when Outlook downloads messages at startup, but much of SP2 is not geared directly toward end users. Instead, it offers several fixes and enhancements that will make most administrators happy.
For example, SP2 adds registry settings that enable an administrator to prevent users from adding other e-mail accounts to their profiles or adding new PSTs. Other new registry values address other problems with LDAP directory accounts, server connection problems, forms, and views.
SP2 also improves Outlook security. For example, it adds additional file types to the list of file attachments it blocks, and implements security fixes for WordMail. In addition, delegates can no longer copy their manager's private appointments to their own mailbox to view them. Several other fixes address other problems with Exchange Server calendars and group scheduling.
SP2 isn't a necessity for everyone, but the security fixes are compelling reasons to deploy for most users. For more information on Office XP SP2 and how it affects Outlook, check out Microsoft's web site at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q325671 |
