Move a user's PST file
 
Although Outlook has a default location for storing personal folder (PST) files, there's no reason why PSTs can't be located in other folders. For example, you might want to move a user's PST from his or her local computer to a network server in order to provide better roaming capability for e-mail.

Unfortunately, there isn't a mechanism within Outlook 2002 to move an existing PST, but you can accomplish the move with a few manual steps. Here's how:

Shut down Outlook.

Open the Mail applet in Control Panel, or right-click the Outlook icon on the desktop and choose Properties.

Click Data Files.

Select the PST to move and click Open Folder.

Move the file to the desired location and close the folder.

In the Outlook Data Files dialog box, click Settings, then click OK on the resulting error message.

Browse to the new PST location, select the file, click Open, and click OK.

Close the Outlook Data Files dialog box, open Outlook, and verify that the folders open as expected.

For Outlook 2000 users, just close Outlook and open the user's profile. Remove the PST from the profile, copy the PST file to the new location, then add the PST back to the profile.

Moving a PST offers several benefits. It can help you free up local disk space for the user, which is important for users who hang on to old messages or other items. Also, moving the PST to a network share can significantly reduce logon time for roaming users since the PST isn't copied across the network as a part of the user's profile during logon.
